Things that keep us up to date in the world of poetry and the written word

Poetry & Poets in Rags of September 15

Dear Poetry Aficionados,

Poetry & Poets in Rags blog

The big poety news all over the web is the death of Jim Carroll. In Great Regulars, both Jeff Baker and Jeffrey Brown cover this story. And then PBS Newshour's poem of the week is "Heroin" by Carroll. In Poetic Obituaries, we link to his obit in the New York Times, and also Elaine Woo's item on Carroll in the Los Angeles Times. She is always very good.

News at Eleven begins with three world poetry greats, two Nobelists. First, Seamus Heaney launches a "blistering attack". This is followed by Leonard Cohen concerts attracting demonstrators. Third up is U Win Tin, "a leading member of democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi's opposition party" (and both poets, by the way), being brought in for questioning in Burma.

News at Eleven ends, however, with poetry within other art forms. Our Back Page story is on Bright Star, a movie about John Keats and Fanny Brawne. Just before that, we have poetry in rap. And before that, poetry in a novel.

And dozens more articles. I'd better let you get to surfing. Thanks for clicking in.

Yours,
Rus
